So it began.

SHAREHOLDERS' ESTABLISHING MEETING WAS HELD ON FEBRUARY 7, 1921.
ENTRY INTO TRADE REGISTER FOLLOWED ON FEBRUARY 19th, 1921.
STOCK CAPITAL WAS SET AT 50.000.000 CROWNS OR 125.000 SHARES: Share value was 400 crowns.

The founders were:

  • Prva Hrvatska štedionica in Zagreb (The First Croatian Savings Bank)
  • Slavonija d.d. za industriju drva u Brodu (Wood Industry)
  • Slavonsko trgovačko društvo ugljena Kaufmann i drugovi u Brodu na Savi (Kaufmann and Co. Coal Trade in Brod on Sava)
  • Tvornica za strojeve i željezničku opremu Kistarcs-e (Machine and Railway Equipment)
  • Jugoslavenska banka d.d. u Osijeku

On March 5th, 1921, agreement was reached with Town Magistrate of Brod on Sava freeing The First Yugoslav Factory of Wagons, Machines and Bridges d.d. Brod on Sava from all town levies and contributions till March 5th, 1941.

The scope of works of the Factory included: construction and repair of wagons and locomotives, railway bridges and bridge constructions, fabrication of machinery and diverse transportation gear and equipment, raising and improvement of accompanying industrial branches, taking over of manufacture of equipment for railways, running of its own railway lines and joint management with other companies and similar.

Andrija Kiraly was nominated for general manager of the company, while Mavro Donath was appointed for operating manager. CONSTRUCTION OF FACTORY PREMISES STARTED ON MAY 7th, 1921 AND IT WAS FINISHED IN FEBRUARY 1922.

The factory started with manufacture (repair of wagons) in June 1922. In 1923, it employed 1200 workers.

1961 - 1980

In 1964 Đuro Đaković employed 4520 workers. These days Đuro Đaković expands its production program with equipment for oil processing and chemical industry.

"Study as you work course" was established at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture of Zagreb in Slavonski Brod. Nowadays it is the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Slavonski Brod. In 1969 Đuro Đaković built 6877 new freight cars, out of which 4243 wagons were exported.

It also produced 153 diesel locomotives, and besides of that also 12 sets of motor trains for narrow gauge railways.

In the same period, Đuro Đaković was engaged in reconstruction of the existing and construction of new sugar factories and new cement factories in inland and abroad.

In 1969 Đuro Đaković became the world largest manufacturer of Steambloc boilers. In that period 60.000 tons of steel structures, mainly bridges were produced and 200.000 tons of our own and foreign steel structure were assembled, out of which 48 bridges in inland and abroad. Within the framework of delivery of complete industrial plants and steel structures, especially Iron Works Skopje, Smederevo, Zenica and Sisak, and significant number of cranes, portal and harbour bridges were realized.

In the same period, new products were acquired, such as:

  • Diesel electric locomotive 1882 HP in cooperation with General Motors (USA)
  • Waporax and Thermopac boiler programs in cooperation with Wanson (Belgium)
  • Joint venture with Teddington Bellows (Great Britain) for production of multilayer pipe bellows.

With signing of contract for construction of NPP Krško - Đuro Đaković joined in construction of nuclear power plants. With company Energoinvest Sarajevo 1976 Đuro Đaković started delivery of components for the primary circle of the nuclear power plants.

In 1977 RO Inženjering for design and production engineering was founded.

From 1970 until 1981 sugar factories in Virovitica and sugar factory Bijeljina were built, and with company Krupp Polysius, cement factories Kosjerić, Beočin and Dalmacijacement and the export projects: cement factory in Alexandria and cement factory in Homs realized. With company Babcock the power plant NEKA Iran, 4 x 440 MW was completed.

In the same period premises of Tvornica kompenzatora ( pipe bellows), production and business premises of Montaža and Elektromont for production of heavy equipment, production capacities for cranes, energy plants, IRC (computer centre) and Institute for scientific research were built.

1980 the renovated building of the former gymnasium was opened for the requirements of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering on the Square of Marshall Tito, nowadays Square of Ivana Brlić Mažuranić.

1981 - 1990

1981.agreement on future cooperation between University in Osijek and the High Technical School in Bremen was signed.

New programs are being introduced, so that ĐĐ Elektromont acquires the production program of vending and gambling machines, and ĐĐ bešavne boce (seamless cylinders) starts with production of steel cylinders. In 1982 serial production of harvesters in ĐĐ Tvornica poljoprivrednih strojeva i uređaja in Županja according to technology of company Deutz Fahr was started.

ĐĐ Specijalna vozila began in 1983 new program of production of battle tank M-84. ĐĐ Tvornica vozila produced wagon cisterns 110 m3 for transport of liquefied gas. Construction of nuclear power plant Krško was finished and delivery of MPC circle (collectors and pipe work) for NPP RBMK in USSR until disaster in NPP Černobil 1986 was continued. ĐĐ Inženjering realized construction of sugar factories in Šabac and Požarevac and TE - TO (Thermal and Heat Plant) Ljubljana. Also construction of PP Plomin II 200 MW was started with company Sulzer from Switzerland.

ZET Zagreb, GSP Osijek and GSP Belgrade signed Agreement on Joint Development of Trams, where in perspective also Đuro Đaković had to be included. Delivery of equipment for earth gas processing in INA - Molve was contracted, and delivery of spherical tanks for petrochemical industry in Iraq. Delivery of 214 battle tanks M-84 for Kuwait was contracted and partly realized.

In 1986 Đuro Đaković employed in total 16.339 workers.

1991. -

Đuro Đaković Holding d.d. : 88 years of tradition : 1991. -

Shareholders' establishing meeting of Đuro Đaković Holding d.d. was held on January 31st, 1991. The founders were Hrvatski fond za razvoj (Croatian Development Fund, Hrvatsko željezničko poduzeće d.o.o. (Croatian Railways d.o.o) and Složeno poduzeće Đuro Đaković (Compound enterprise Đuro Đaković )

With decision of the Management Board of ĐĐ Holding from October 26, 1993 the company changed its organizational form and became stock corporation company.

Companies within the Group act independently.

For the customer INA (Earth Gas Processing Plant MOLVE) the first fractionating column 240 tons was delivered - the heaviest product ever manufactured in Đuro Đaković.

From 1991 until 1995 production of several types of weapons and military equipment for Croatian Army was developed and realized.

ĐĐ Montaža d.d. took part in sanitation or construction of new steel bridges. Among the most significant are: bridge on river Drava at Osijek, bridge on Sava in Županja - Orašje, bridge over Sava, Slavonski Brod - Bosanski Brod. At the same time equipment for cement factory in Lebanon and continuous employment of up to 300 workers in Germany were realized in cooperation with companies Babcock and Polysius.

ĐĐ Termoenergetska postrojenja d.d. and ĐĐ Monaža d.d. built TE-TO Zagreb West in cooperation with ĐĐ Inženjering, and finished construction of the PP Plomin II. In the same time, companies in the ownership of ĐĐ Holding d.d. were certified in accordance with ISO 9000, and jointly with RW TUV, company RW TUV Croatia was established.
